Before you get biking, you might need some help finding an affordable bike, getting geared up, and learning to ride safely on the road. We’ve got you—check out Affordable Bikes and Safe Rides in South Side Atlanta for all the tips.

Paths and trails to try

It’s time to roll—but where will you cruise? There’s plenty of options throughout the South Side, including the paved, 1.5-mile East Point PATH and Southtowne Trail near Browns Mill Golf Course, both managed by the PATH Foundation. See a full list of the PATH trails within Metro Atlanta here.

MTB Atlanta keeps up-to-date info on trails hours and maintenance throughout South Atlanta, including 3 loop trails in Brown’s Mill Battlefield and the Dogwood Church Trails in Tyrone. If you try these trails, make sure you’ve got some strong tires: these dirt and gravel paths are meant for sturdy mountain bikes!

Closer to the airport, the Phoenix Rail Trail runs 2 miles from 2077 West Point Ave in College Park to West Park Ave. The paved, two-way trail provides a smooth ride for any level. Further out in Peachtree City are 90 miles of multi-use trails for trail bikes, plus bike lanes along Dividend Drive and Robinson Road for street cyclists. For a longer ride, hit the Arabia Mountain PATH to the east, where you’ll find a 30-mile bike trail running through Panola Mountain State Park and beyond.

To find more trail and path recommendations, plus view maps and learn about the route, try the AllTrails platform. You’ll be able to upload routes, view others’ recommendations, and see reviews of each path from other cyclists.

Groups to ride with

Community rides roll all over the South Side, with new rides happening monthly and weekly, depending on the group. You can keep an eye on all the options on FlashRide, which includes route maps and social links for each listing.

For $30 a year, you can join the SouthSide Cycling Club, which hosts several rides per week throughout Fayette and Coweta County. Ladies on Spokes, a Christian women’s biking club, begins rides in Haralson, Pine Lake, Powder Springs, and even along the Silver Comet Trail.

Southern Crescent Cycling, which hosts 3 rides a week for social, intermediate, and advanced-level cyclists, hosts rides starting in Lithiona. Yearly memberships are $45. Check out their calendar and ride locations on their website.

Even more group ride options are available at the Atlanta Trek locations in Peachtree City, McDonough, and Newnan. See the calendar of rides on each location’s webpage

Your ride can count for more

Wherever you ride, be sure to stay safe on the road and wear a helmet! This October, don’t forget to log your rides in the Biketober challenge, too—they could get you a new bike, a free tune-up, or other cycling goodies.
