Affordable Bikes and Safe Rides in South Side Atlanta

Biketober is finally here—that means you’ll want to share your rides with Georgia Commute Options to win gift cards, biking gear, and maybe even a free e-bike! Join the challenge with the rest of Metro Atlanta to make your rides in October count for that much more.

Below the Beltline, there’s still miles of trails and roads for your next bike trip. To keep you safe and riding smoothly, we’ve collected a list of trails, bike resources, safety guides, and group rides in South Side Atlanta. Read below to find what you need, from how to ride in the road to where you can get a free helmet.

Earn-your-own bike and free helmets

Bikes and biking gear can get expensive. Luckily, Atlanta is home to a few non-profits and bicycle co-ops that can help you get rolling without breaking the bank. Bearings Bike Works in Adair Park offers a Skills for Life program where kids learn to fix and maintain bikes, starting on practice bikes and earning stars every hour that they can spend on their own bike and accessories. Plus, the program gives them the skills and confidence to fix bikes on their own. If you’d like a bike without committing to work, shop their affordable refurbished bike collection anytime.

SOPO Bicycle Co. also offers low-cost used bikes in Adair Park, 0.7 miles from the West End MARTA station. Visitors can buy used bikes, use the donated parts to fix their own bikes, and even earn their own bike through volunteer hours at the shop. Follow sopobikecoop on social media to see where they’re bringing bikes next.

Free Bikes 4 Kidz Atlanta, a local non-profit, also provides donated and refurbished bikes to families in need. Contact your local church, school, non-profit, or other community organization to ask about a FB4K connection, or apply here to distribute bikes through your org

Finally, the most important part: you’ll need a helmet! Courtesy of Farah & Farah’s Keeping Kids Safe program, you can apply for a free helmet now and learn how to check its fit.

Staying safe on your ride

Riding on roads and trails requires caution and a little know-how: that’s why Georgia DOT made the Bike Sense guide, a quick resource that can get you riding with confidence. Georgia Bikes has the Bicyclist Pocket Guide in English and Spanish, too, so you can stay reminded of important safety and bike law tips.

If you’d prefer some more hands-on practice, try one of Propel ATL’s free bike classes. You can sign up anytime for beginners’ courses or City Cycling, which shares urban riding tips you’ll need within the city. If you’d like to schedule a bike class for your workplace, neighborhood, or other group, contact Propel ATL

Love to Ride offers tip sheets, videos, and handy guides for everything from bike maintenance to riding in the dark and navigating rides with long clothing. Check out their catalog to learn all you’ll need to bike safely and efficiently, no matter where you’re headed.

Your ride can count for more

This October, your bike rides can get you prizes! Join Georgia Commute Options’ Biketober challenge to compete with cyclists across the district and win prizes for riding, sharing with your friends, and for registering by September 30. Learn more on the Biketober site below, and remember: more rides = more chances to win
