The world is coming to Atlanta. Is your commute ready?

Check out our World Cup Webinar Replay

The Shift team hosted a webinar to help employees and commuters understand what to expect, identify high-impact travel windows, and build a reliable commute plan before game-day disruption begins.

Eight matches. A semifinal. A Fan Festival that runs for weeks. FIFA World Cup 26™ is not a weekend event; it is a six-week transportation test for every South Metro and airport-area worker. Here is your game plan.

Why this hits differently for South Metro commuters?

With 8 matches including a semifinal on July 15, plus a FIFA Fan Festival running for weeks at Centennial Olympic Park, we will certainly see sustained high-volume traffic with commuters stacked on top of each other. For commuters, the corridor pressure will be very real on every match day.

Red cards — what not to do on match days

Do not drive solo within 2 hours of kickoff or post-match. Expect Uber, Lyft, and other ride-share surge pricing to start 2–3 hours before kickoff and continue 1–2 hours post-match. The July 15 semifinal carries the highest disruption risk. It’ll be best to not rely on these ride options for any time-sensitive trips on these dates. Surge multipliers of 3–5x are realistic for the July 15 semifinal, meaning you could end up paying over $100 for your normal commute trip.

When employers hear “transportation programs,” they often picture expensive shuttles or complicated systems. In reality, the most effective solutions are usually practical, targeted, and tailored.

1. Shift your departure by 90 minutes

Leave at least 90 minutes earlier than normal — before stadium-bound traffic from the south merges onto I-75/I-85 northbound. Post-match, wait at least 90 minutes before requesting any ride.

2. Take MARTA

The Gold and Red lines run directly through South Metro with stops in East Point, College Park and Hartsfield-Jackson. Plus, MARTA is planning for improved rail service with 5-minute headways during this period. This will make MARTA the single most protected commute route option on match days. Load your Breeze card before match week. Check the MARTA trip planner now and build the habit before June 15.

3. Carpool

Coordinate with coworkers now to establish a carpool pattern and take advantage of HOW lanes for big match weeks. Or you can find carpool partners and incentives like monthly gas cards through the MyGCO app.

The perfect time to log your trips & earn real rewards.

Here’s a perk most commuters don’t know about: you can earn real cash just for not driving alone. The MyGCO app turns carpools, transit, biking, and walking into real cash rewards– and with six weeks of World Cup traffic, June 11 – July 19 is prime earning season. Commute smarter, earn rewards.

  • Carpool / Vanpool
    • Log every shared trip
  • MARTA / Transit
    • Each one-way trip counts
  • Bike / Walk
    • Active commutes earn too

Final Decisions

This summer, Atlanta steps onto the world stage and South Metro workers are the ones who keep it running. For six weeks, every shift will start with navigating the world’s biggest sporting event. Workers who get ahead of it now won’t just survive the six weeks; they’ll own them. Request your 5-step commute plan today and stay tuned — Shift has a full suite of World Cup-specific resources on the way to help you make this the smoothest summer commute yet.
